Image

Q: When is RB4 coming out?!
A: Rock Band will be out this year. Stay tuned for more specifics in the coming months.

Q: What consoles is RB4 coming out for?
A: Rock Band 4 will be released for Xbox One and PlayStation 4.

Q: Why not Wii / Wii U / PC?
A: Due to shifting production priorities and capabilities of the studio, we don’t currently have plans to release RB4 on the Wii / Wii U / PC simultaneously with Xbox One and PS4. While we genuinely appreciate the support of Wii Rock band users over the years, and the increased interest from PC gamers, the truth is that we had to prioritize opportunities on other platforms with historically larger RB audiences.

Q: Will my old DLC work on the next gen console of the same type, i.e. PS3 -> PS4?
A: Yes! Content purchased from the store or exported from a disc will transfer over to the new generation of consoles at not addition cost as we make that content available.

Q: Will my old DLC work if I bought a different next gen console, i.e. Xbox 360 -> PS4?
A: Cross platform DLC compatibility is not entirely within our control, as DLC ownership is managed by the 1st parties.

Q: Will my old hardware work?
A: We’re already working closely with Mad Catz, Sony, and Microsoft on solutions for letting you use legacy hardware on new consoles. This is a challenge on both the software side and hardware side, but something we’d love to happen. We’ll have more information on this in the coming months.

Q: Will you be making new hardware?
A: Yes we will! You can preorder a new PAX East exclusive guitar if you come by the Harmonix booth! We’re working with Mad Catz, who has a lot of history with RB gear, and we’re excited to get more instruments back into the world.

Q: Will there be any new instruments, i.e. a tuba, accordion, mouth harp, etc?
A: We’re concentrating on the core band that people are most familiar with (guitar, bass, drums, and mic) rather than expanding on the types of playable instruments in RB4.

Q: What will the new Rock Band cost?
A: Sorry, but we’re not talking about pricing at this time.

Q: What instruments will be playable? Wiill RB4 have Pro guitar and keys?
A: Rock Band 4 will focus on the core experience and the roots of the franchise – guitar, bass, drums, and vocals. There will be no Pro Guitar or key support in Rock Band 4. We will continue to support “Pro” mode for Drums.

Q: What are the new features?
A: We’re not quite ready to reveal the evolutionary features of Rock Band 4, but we’re excited to show you in the coming months how we’re expanding the core gameplay you love.

Q: Will you be bringing back [Random Feature X]?
A: We’re not quite ready to reveal the feature set of Rock Band 4 yet, but keep posted for more info!

Q: Will you have songs by [Random Band X]?
A: We’re not talking about the disc soundtrack just yet, but you can bet it’ll be awesome. Over 2000 songs spanning over 500 artists already exist in Rock Band catalog and we’re committed to expanding that and supporting the game post-launch with DLC, and we’re always looking for new bands and sounds, so keep the suggestions coming! Let us know what you want at RockBand.com/request

Q: When will you have more news about RB4?
A: Soon! Keep posted to our social channels and the Harmonix forums for updates.

Q: When can I preorder RB4?
A: You can sign up for preorder notifications right now at RockBand.com/preorder!

Q: Will my old DLC work on the next gen console of the same type, i.e. PS3 -> PS4?
A: Yes! Content purchased from the store or exported from a disc will transfer over to the new generation of consoles at not addition cost as we make that content available.

There will be no Pro Guitar or key support in Rock Band 4.

ROCK BAND 4 MAY BE THE LAST MUSIC GAME YOU’LL EVER NEED – IGN FIRST

One Rock Band to rule them all?

The story of its rise and fall in the last console generation has been well documented, but none of that even matters anymore. What counts is that Rock Band 4 is a real game, with the intention of being the only Rock Band game you’ll need for years to come. My band (read: IGN’s Mitch Dyer, Zach Ryan, and I) traveled to Harmonix Music Systems to see, play, and understand Rock Band 4. Yes, it’s getting back to Rock Band’s basics – guitar, drums, bass, and vocals, while ditching the keyboard – but it’s also energizing the game with five years’ worth of added wisdom and perspective, along with a new focus on self-expression that should help players live out their rock ‘n’ roll fantasies in a new way for the remainder of this console generation.

The Beautiful People

Harmonix’s first job was making sure the familiar felt fun. Rock Band 4 runs on a new game engine at 1080p and 60fps – and it’s definitely much prettier than ever, particularly in the lighting department – but it retains the same lighthearted style and feel it always did. And that’s by design. And yes, it will be instantly compatible with over 2,000 previous Rock Band songs. But Harmonix also wants to change how you interact with those tracks. Even though you’re reliving rock’s biggest tunes, Harmonix wants you to be able to put your own signature touch on them.
“Personal expression is one of those areas where, when you’re playing a song, regardless of one of those areas, whether you’re playing in your parent’s garage, or playing on a giant stage at Madison Square Garden, the music doesn’t happen unless you play it,” began Rock Band 4 Product Manager Daniel Sussman. “And giving people that sense of ownership of the song is really important, and it’s a huge part of the fantasy, and it’s one of the things you want to do as the spotlight’s on you. It’s your moment to do something, and it’s not just about execution, it’s about expression.

“And to me, that’s one of the big missing pieces of the Rock Band experience, and it’s where we’ve really doubled down. And not at the expense of the original gameplay, which was very refined, and well-presented and really fun, but across the board, for guitar, for drums, for vocals…I feel like we have features that really allow you as a player to color outside the lines. It’s a phrase [Rock Band 4 creative lead] Greg [LoPiccolo] uses a lot, and it’s not about specific thing that you have to do. It’s…as an artist, it’s what do you want to do? And as a developer, can we develop the tools to make you feel like you’re doing something amazing without any musical background or training? And that’s what this game is all about.”

For the drums, this comes in the form of, first, counting in your band when you’re ready to begin the song. It’s a little thing, but it adds a sense of band camaraderie and leadership when the person behind the kit taps the green tom (or cymbal, if you’re using one of the old or upcoming re-issue of the Rock Band Cymbal Kit) 3-5 times in order to trigger the beginning of your performance.
More impactful, however, are the new mid-song drum fills. Harmonix says it found most Rock Band players to be thrown off by the old system’s completely free-form fill sections, used to trigger Overdrive, and have responded in Rock Band 4 by authoring a massive suite of fun, realistic drum fills that the game will randomly throw at you, based on the song’s genre and difficulty.

“If you have enough Overdrive power to complete playing the fills, the system will just serve up a random sequence of fills from a pool,” explained LoPiccolo, noting that, since not every fill is appropriate for every genre, they’ll have pools of metal fills, pop fills, country fills, etc. “Every fill that you play is completely in time and sounds great. They are all authored, but you have the real experience drummers have of having to be random every time through the song.”
In other words, you’re going to get tailored drum fills that are more fun to play than wildly thrashing about.

Better still, LoPiccolo clarified, is that that this new drum fill feature is backwards compatible. “The new drum fill feature will work in all songs going forward and in all the legacy DLC,” he said. “It basically drops into every Rock Band song that we have ever authored.”

For singers, Harmonix hopes that Rock Band 4 will be the best karaoke game ever made. Not only will the vocal harmonies added in The Beatles: Rock Band return, but a dedicated group of the Rock Band fan community have gone back and authored harmonies for every previous song and handed it over to Harmonix. For free.

Rock Band 4 will also give expert game singers a new way to test their skills and express their vocal creativity: freeform melodies. “For hard and expert players, there was this premium on just hitting that exact pitch that was authored into the songs,” LoPiccolo said. “And what we discovered was that a lot of really good singers were constrained by that; they couldn’t have the kind of fun – the expressive fun – that they wanted to have as singers. So, we’ve added a feature now where as long as you’re singing in tune, you can kind of color outside the lines. You don’t have to stick with the prescribed part; you can make up your own harmonies on the fly, and as long as you sing them in tune, the game will give you credit for it. It’s a little bit hard to describe, but to actually do it, it’s incredibly liberating and fun. It’s a whole new way for singers to be creative with Rock Band.”
One other clever touch on this feature: as you sing your custom vocal performance, your score multiplier meter fills up both clockwise (traditional scoring) and counterclockwise (Improvisation scoring). Thus, you’re able to mix and match singing by the numbers and going off-script, while still contributing to your maximum reward either way.

The campaign, meanwhile, is perhaps Rock Band 4’s most interesting reach in the gameplay design department. It is, effectively, a Rock Band RPG. “We’re just working really hard at making everything feel like you are living this story, feeling what it’s like to be a musician playing gigs, playing shows,” said Rock Band 4 designer Alli Thresher. “We want you to step up to the mic and interact with them, tell jokes, have them respond to your jokes, you know? Everything’s about all the stuff that all of us might have experienced, and want to share it with the people playing the game.”

Heck, insofar as Harmonix’s make-you-feel-like-you’re-in-a-band fantasy goes, even the old, somewhat-obscure Rock Band Stage Kit will be compatible with Rock Band 4...probably. “It’s this crazy bit of passion play on the art development team,” explained Sussman. “The people that have a Stage Kit that work here are maniacally committed to supporting it. So yeah, of course Rock Band 4 is going to support the Stage Kit, to the degree of support like legacy hardware in the first place, right? It’s a controller, and if we can figure out how to get it to the console, people are going to get their fog and their lights. Which is amazing. It’s one of these things…it’s never scheduled, it’s never planned for, and at the end of the day, you read though that code and it’s like, ‘I can’t believe [we] did it.’ So, yeah.

Merci Shaka :aime2:
